Hong Kong mulls over Lantau transport hub

Bridge slated to open by end-2016.

Secretary for Development Paul Chan says the Government plans to develop the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge boundary crossing into a transportation hub.

Mr Chan told lawmakers today the bridge is scheduled to open in late 2016, and said the Government also plans to promote the economy in nearby 'bridgehead' areas.

Public transport will be provided between Hong Kong boundary-crossing facilities and the airport, Tung Chung, Tuen Mun, and other parts of Lantau, creating a transportation hub for the west of Hong Kong, he said.

Mr Chan said travellers coming to Hong Kong via the bridge can patronise commercial and tourism facilities in North Lantau, creating business and employment opportunities.

“We are also considering the future expansion programme of the airport, including a three-runway system,” he said, adding the Airport Authority is working on a development strategy for the northern commercial district at Chek Lap Kok.
