2 in 5 Hong Kongers check emails as soon as waking up

Early to rise, early to work.

According to a survey by APSIS for internet savvy users aged 25-44 in Asia, (90% percent of which are highly educated i.e college graduate and masters degree holders) 99% of people use email on a mobile device whether for personal reasons, for work, or both.

On the other hand, Google’s study in around China and Hong Kong, 64% of the respondents said they use their smartphone every day for the last 7 days.

Where 54% said they would rather not have a television than be without their smartphone. In the US, based on internet research, the number one activity on smartphone is sending and receiving email.

It is then safe say that email is the most adapted digital marketing channel for both numbers of users and of messages.

Based on servers in Asia for the last six (6) months, 1 out of 4 messages are opened through the smartphone; where 49% of which read email while on vacation or during the weekends.

40% read ofce email outside of their business hours and 49% use smartphones to read private email during work hours.

In Hong Kong, 40% respondents said that they often read email first thing in the morning as soon as they get out of bed. However, this is not a good time for an email marketer to send out their campaigns.

Instead, 42% said the last thing they do before they go to bed is to check their email, which is perhaps the perfect time for a marketer to send emails at probably generally around 7pm.

50% of respondents in Hong Kong said that they read their emails while commuting or traveling whereas 75% respondents say the smartphone is a good tool to maintain their inboxes such as deleting messages they’ll never read or to respond quickly to their bosses, colleagues, and clients.

72% said they use the smartphone to prepare emails that may be read at a latter time because 38% are actually hesitant to click links on their smartphones since they expect the web designs aren’t tailored for their phones’ capability. Most websites aren’t well-designed for smartphones these days yet.

The survey was presented at Apsis Seminar ( Succeed with Mobile Email Marketing) last February 1,2013 at HK Arts Center which was conducted by Anders Frankel.
