Here's what you need to know about housing for the "sandwich class"

The government is looking into the idea.

Based on information from the SCMP, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive (CE) is looking at introducing a new type of subsidised housing tailor-made for the “sandwich class”.

According to a research note from Barclays, the CE had the idea to introduce another layer of subsidised housing for people whose income is over the threshold for public rental flats (i.e HK$14,790/month for a two-person household) but who cannot afford Home Ownership Scheme flats.

The project might be in areas with less developed transport networks, as the HOS flats in Tai O had been a big hit at its launch.

The report noted that the Tai O HOS flats attracted 12,500 applicants for 85 units which were priced between HK$641,000 to HK$897,300 for homes of 478sf to 482sf.
