Gov’t assures better business environment under new national security ordinance

The public consultation on the law received 98.6% positive responses.

The government said that the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance: Basic Law Article 23 Legislation will provide a better business environment for businesses operating in Hong Kong.

This statement is a response to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s criticism of the legislation.

Secretary for Security Tang Pink-keung said that a public consultation on the law was conducted and received a 98.6% positive response, reflecting the society’s strong support for the legislation.

Tang also said that the extraterritorial effect for the offences endangering national security under the ordinance fully aligns with international law.

“The ordinance will not affect normal business operations and normal worldwide exchanges of local institutions, organisations, and individuals. Law-abiding persons, including US businessmen and enterprises in Hong Kong and US travellers visiting Hong Kong, will not engage in acts and activities endangering our national security and will not unwittingly violate the law,” Tang said.
