HSBC to roll out HKD-denominated stablecoins in H2 2026

The HKMA granted HSBC a stablecoin issuer licence.

HSBC will launch HKD-denominated stablecoins in the second half of 2026.

The bank clinched a stablecoin issuer license from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), according to an announcement on 10 April 2026.

The stablecoins will be backed with reserved deposits 1:1 at HSBC, according to a media fact sheet from HSBC. It is expected to provide retail and merchant customers with “instant, secure options for everyday transactions and allow investment in selected tokenised assets.”

The stablecoins, once released, will be available in the PayMe app and the HSBC HK app.

HSBC also plans to add stablecoins in non-HKD currencies.
