HSBC to launch teck institute to tackle agentic AI fraud
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology joins as the anchor academic partner.
HSBC is establishing a global artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technology institute in Hong Kong to develop innovative technologies for deployment across its operations.
The institute is set to begin operations in early 2027, initially focusing on AI upskilling, safety and fraud detection, post-quantum cryptography, and blockchain, including research into emerging fraud threats in the agentic AI era.
“Technology is reshaping financial services at remarkable speed. HSBC will explore the opportunities it creates thoughtfully and strategically,” said David Liao, Co-Chief Executive, Asia Pacific and Middle East, HSBC.
He added that Hong Kong’s financial expertise, research capabilities, and global connections make it a strong base for the initiative.
HSBC has selected the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as its anchor academic partner, alongside other academic and technology partners.
HKUST will provide scientific expertise, specialist research, access to talent and connections with leading academic institutions. Additional technology partners may join in the future, HSBC said.
The institute will be based in Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis.
