Hong Kong to set up 5 green energy corridors by 2030

Its First Five-Year Plan targets 7% green fuel use amongst registered vessels.

Hong Kong will establish five Green Energy Corridors by 2030 to help develop the city into a green maritime fuel bunkering and trading centre under its First Five-Year Plan.

The proportion of Hong Kong-registered vessels using green maritime fuels is targeted to reach 7% in 2030.

Carbon emissions from the Kwai Tsing Container Terminals are also targeted to decline 30% in 2030 compared with 2021.

The targets form part of HKSAR's plans to develop a smart and green port and strengthen logistics data interconnection.

The government will expedite development of a green maritime fuel bunkering and trading centre whilst strengthening collaboration with cities in the Pan-Pearl River Delta to develop Hong Kong-centric Green Energy Corridors.

It will also study the co-development of a green and low-carbon industrial and supply chain for new-energy vessels.

The plan proposes a model of “production, storage, and transport in South China; bunkering and trading in Hong Kong; servicing global shipping” to establish an end-to-end low-carbon regional green maritime fuel supply chain.

HKSAR will also accelerate the smart transition of the Kwai Tsing Container Terminals and continue developing the Port Community System through deeper integration with the Global Shipping Business Network.

The system will provide sea-, land- and air-logistics and supply chain data, alongside value-added services such as One Data Multiple Declarations for local logistics and trading companies.
