Credit card transaction value decline in Q2

This is despite the volume of transactions rising during the quarter.

The value of credit card transactions in Hong Kong declined in Q2 2025 although the number of transactions rose, central bank data showed.

The total number of credit card transactions was 360.1 million during the April-June period, an 8.3% increase compared to the previous quarter, and 11.8% higher than in Q2 2024, according to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in a press release on 19 September 2025.

But the total value of transitions, at HK$268.4b, was 2.1% lower than in Q1— although it was a 12.2% jump compared to Q2 2024.

Of the total value, 62.7% or HK$168.1b were retail transactions in Hong Kong, 34% of HK$91.2b were for overseas retail spending, and 3.4% or HK$9b were cash advances.

The total number of credit cards in circulation was 22.8 million by the end of Q2 2025, 4.2% higher than in Q1 and 14.6% higher than in Q2 2024.
