Bupa Hong Kong unveils cross-border health plan amidst Shenzhen demand

Covers inpatient care in Greater China with outpatient benefits in Hong Kong.

Bupa Hong Kong has launched Bupa Care Bridge, a health insurance plan designed for Hong Kong residents who access healthcare in both Hong Kong and Mainland China, offering inpatient coverage across Greater China and outpatient care in Hong Kong.

The plan covers inpatient treatment across Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China, and Taiwan depending on plan tier, with worldwide emergency coverage also included.

Bupa said the product responds to rising cross-border healthcare usage, citing around 700,000 medical visits by Hong Kong residents in Shenzhen in 2024.

It said the plan offers two coverage levels and flexible deductible options, allowing policyholders to balance premiums and protection needs.

Inpatient care is provided through cashless arrangements at designated hospitals, subject to pre-authorisation, with room entitlements varying by location.

Outpatient services are included in the higher-tier plan and cover GP and specialist consultations, traditional Chinese medicine, physiotherapy, and diagnostic tests such as X-rays and laboratory services.

Outpatient co-payments start from $5.11 (HK$40) for GP visits and $7.66 (HK$60) for specialist consultations.

The launch comes amidst a recovery in Hong Kong’s insurance and tourism sectors, with rising visitor arrivals supporting demand for cross-border insurance products.

Market data indicates Mainland Chinese visitors remain a key driver of insurance and wealth-related sales activity in the city.

Other features include streamlined underwriting via a simplified health questionnaire, lifetime renewal, and care coordination support for cross-border treatment, including discharge assistance between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

The plan also includes preventive health check-ups aimed at supporting early detection and ongoing health management.
