Hang Seng launches China A copper industry index
It tracks 40 mainland firms across copper value chain.
Hang Seng Indexes Company has launched a new benchmark tracking mainland China-listed companies involved in the copper industry value chain.
The Hang Seng China A Copper Industry Index covers companies engaged in upstream copper mining activities and selected downstream applications, including copper-derived structural shapes, printed circuit boards, wires, and cables manufacturing.
The index includes A-shares listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Shenzhen Stock Exchange, and Beijing Stock Exchange, excluding real estate investment trusts.
Eligible companies must meet market value and turnover requirements, including a 12-month average market value of at least $5.8b (CNY5b) and a six-month average daily turnover of at least $23.3m (CNY20m).
Hang Seng Indexes Company said the index aims to “reflect the performance of Chinese mainland-listed companies operating in the Copper industry value chain.”
The benchmark will comprise up to 40 constituents selected based on market capitalisation rankings.
Copper sector companies will receive priority selection, whilst companies from other subsectors can qualify if at least 20% of their revenue comes from copper-related industries.
The index uses a free-float adjusted market capitalisation weighting method, with copper sector constituents capped at 15% and other sector constituents capped at 3%.
The index launched on 7 August 2026, with a base date of 30 December 2022 and a base value of 3,000. It will be reviewed every six months and rebalanced quarterly.
Hang Seng Indexes Company said the index will be calculated and disseminated in real time at two-second intervals.
