Prudential faces earnings test amidst China insurance slump

Jefferies sees gains from Hong Kong exposure and reduced mainland bancassurance reliance.

Investors are turning their attention to Prudential Plc ahead of its third-quarter trading update next week, with analysts evaluating the company’s growth prospects, key sector challenges, and potential market risks following financial disclosures from competitor AIA.

Insurers across Hong Kong and mainland China have faced operational hurdles in recent months, according to Jefferies’ 30 October equity research report.

An industry-wide surge in quarterly activity previously satisfied a significant share of customer demand, creating sharp subsequent drops.

Across mainland China, competitor sales plummeted—AIA reported a 33% decline in third-quarter Value of New Business (VONB), whilst Ping An experienced a 54% drop.

Additionally, high historical performance baselines have weighed on year-on-year comparisons, alongside market anxieties that regulatory changes might weaken long-term consumer demand across Hong Kong.

Analysts at Jefferies expect Prudential to navigate these headwinds more effectively than its immediate peers due to structural differences in its business model.

Prudential maintains a significantly higher exposure to Hong Kong and lower relative exposure to mainland China's slowing bancassurance distribution channel.

Following strong underlying trends shown by AIA—where Hong Kong VONB achieved a 16.5% compound annual growth rate over 2024–2026 despite high baseline comparisons—expectations remain positive for Prudential.

Whilst Prudential shares rose 3% in initial reaction to AIA’s update, market watchers note a distinct risk ahead of next week’s release.

AIA demonstrated that overall momentum accelerated sharply toward the end of the quarter, recording 25% growth in September and a 20% combined increase across August and September in Hong Kong.
