Peak Re faces margin squeeze as global expansion grows: S&P
Softer reinsurance pricing could undermine returns.
Peak Reinsurance Co. Ltd. is poised for steady business growth and profitable operations over the next two years as it pushes ahead with global expansion.
The Hong Kong-based reinsurer is projected to expand its premium income through new underwriting platforms, geographical growth, and a stronger focus on structured solutions and life insurance, according to a performance outlook by S&P Global Ratings.
Life insurance previously made up less than 20% of Peak Re’s total premiums in 2025, when the company ranked as the 27th largest global reinsurer by gross written premiums.
To protect profit margins during this expansion, Peak Re must balance rapid business growth with disciplined risk selection.
After shifting away from volatile property catastrophe insurance in 2023, the firm returned to underwriting profits.
For 2026 through 2028, S&P estimates Peak Re’s property and casualty net combined ratio—a key measure where a lower percentage indicates better underwriting profitability—will sit between 90% and 95%, compared to 87.9% in 2025.
This expected increase is driven by softening prices across the global reinsurance market and short-term volatility from entering new markets.
Financially, the company is expected to maintain very strong capital reserves through 2028, holding capital well above S&P’s strictest 99.95% risk-based confidence level.
Peak Re entered 2026 with a regulatory solvency ratio of 209%. Dividend payouts to shareholders are expected to remain moderate at under 30% of net income over the next two years.
