Hong Kong’s travel and medical insurance complaints rise 33%

The Bureau recorded 857 travel and medical insurance complaints in 2025.

In 2025, Hong Kong recorded 857 complaints related to travel and medical insurance in 2025.

Data from the Insurance Complaints Bureau also said this was up approximately 32.7% year-on-year.

Of 447 concluded cases reviewed by the Bureau, 124 resulted in compensation, with total payouts of about HK$13.6m.

The data suggests a gap between what consumers expect from travel insurance and what policies provide.

According to analysis by 10Life, many consumers do not examine policy terms closely before travelling.

This can lead to disputes when claims are made, particularly in areas where coverage conditions are unclear or restrictive.

The study identified several common reasons for claim rejections. Standard travel insurance policies often exclude activities such as study tours, volunteer work and working holidays, as insurers assess claims based on the main purpose of the trip.

Flight disruptions caused by airline operational or commercial decisions, such as schedule reductions linked to fuel costs, are also typically not covered.
