Gov't eyes merging two R&D centres for faster tech development
ITC stated that it would save operating costs.
The government is proposing to merge the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and the Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI), for faster development of the the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint.
Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong said the merger aims to deepen the reform of public research and development (R&D) institutions.
ASTRI will drive and coordinate applied R&D in information and communications technologies, whilst NAMI will be responsible for nanotechnology and new materials.
The Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) said the merging will save operating costs by rationalisation and consolidation in the long run.
The ITC will commission an independent consultant to make suggestions on the transitional period and arrange the redeployment of staff.
The government will commence the transition process from 2025 to 2026.
