Gov't seeks stronger web security with new bill
It aims to reduce cyberattack damage.
Secretary for Security Tang Ping-keung said the government is eyeing to enhance the security of Hong Kong’s computer systems as a whole through the proposed web security bill.
During a briefing on the bill's consultation report, Tang said that the proposed legislation aims to reduce cyberattack damage and facilitate the operation of essential services by stipulating organisational, preventive, and reporting and response obligations. It will be fulfilled by 200 local and foreign critical infrastructure operators.
He also reassured stakeholders of ongoing communication and consideration of their feedback. The Security Bureau will hold 10 working meetings this month to further discuss the proposed web security bill.
Of the 53 submissions received in July, 52 supported the legislation or offered constructive feedback.
Tang recently addressed key concerns, including possibly extending the incident reporting timeline. He also reiterated that the legislation will not have extraterritorial effects or target personal data or commercial secrets.
