Unemployment rate remains flat at 2.8% in June-August

This translates to around 117,400 unemployed Hong Kongers.

Hong Kong’s employment market remained tight after unemployment levels held steady for the fourth consecutive time in 2018 after standing at 2.8% in June-August, according to the Census & Statistics Department. 

This translates to around 117,400 unemployed Hong Kongers in June-August on the back of mild improvements in the labour situation the information and communications, accommodation and retail sectors.

Total employment rose by 9,700 to 3.88 million in June-August. The labour force also increased from 3.98 million to 3.99 million over the same period.

Underemployment levels also remained flat at 1,1% in June-August, translating to 45,500 underemployed persons.

"Whilst labour market conditions will likely remain favourable in the near term, the Government will stay vigilant as to how developments in the external environment will affect the local labour market going forward," Dr Law Chi-kwong, secretary for labour and welfare said in a statement.
