Overseas hiring to fill talent gap in tech roles: report

Demand for AI-driven roles is increasingly growing.

Hong Kong companies are tapping global talent pools to fill tech gaps, with Malaysia, the Philippines, and India emerging as top sourcing markets, according to Deel.

Meanwhile, global demand for Hong Kong talent is growing, with US-based hires of Hong Kong professionals rising 47% year-on-year (YoY).

The top roles for Hong Kong talent hired internationally include software engineer/developer, business development/consultant, and marketing.

According to Deel, AI-driven roles rose 585% YoY in 2024 compared to 2023. In addition, hiring for AI engineers increased by 340%, whilst senior AI positions such as director and head of AI tripled.

The median salary for AI-related roles stands at US$73,000, 120% higher than the median salary of US$33,000 for all other roles..

“AI is reshaping industries at lightning speed, and the race for talent is undoubtedly global. It is clear that Hong Kong’s ambition to be an AI leader will depend on its ability to unlock untapped talent pools beyond borders,” Karen Ng, regional head of expansion for Enterprise at Deel North and South Asia said.
