74% of HK employers open to hiring SEN youths

Over 76.5% of respondents have not previously hired SEN youths.

Seventy four percent of 102 surveyed local companies are willing to hire youths with Special Educational Needs (SEN), according to the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) Youth Employment Network.

Key reasons for this openness include recognising their talent (81.0%) and a commitment to social responsibility (67.2%).

The survey, conducted between 25 June and 25 July, also revealed that over 76.5% of respondents have not previously hired SEN youths.

Employers believe that additional support measures could increase their willingness to hire SEN individuals. These measures include trial work opportunities (26.2%), government subsidies (22.4%), and one-on-one support from social workers (18.7%).

Support from social service organisations such as understanding SEN categories before interviews (22.5%) and regular follow-up (13.9%) is also considered valuable.

In conjunction with the survey, HKFYG held a "SEN Youth Job Opportunities Seminar" with Hong Kong Legislative Council member Mr. Teng Ka-piu. It highlighted strategies for integrating SEN youths into the workforce.

Additionally, HKFYG is launching an "Inclusive Workplace Program" to connect employers with social workers who will provide training, job matching, and 12 months of on-the-job support.

Huang Haoyi, supervisory director of HKFYG, urged companies to be open-minded about SEN candidates, noting that suitable roles and environments can help these individuals make valuable contributions.

Since 2013, HKFYG has supported SEN youths through programs like "Career Bridge" and "Career Taste," offering career exploration, skills training, and job counseling to over 130 schools and nearly 1,400 SEN youths.
