Hong Kong’s inbound tourism rises 64% in H1 2024 with strong mainland support

Almost half of the visitors stayed overnight in the city.

Hong Kong’s inbound tourism rose 64% year-on-year to 21.15 million visitors in H1 2024, with an average of 116,000 daily visitors, Colliers reported.

The majority (16.5 million) of the visitors were from mainland China whilst the other 5 million were from overseas.

Almost half, or 10.5 million of these visitors stayed overnight in the city, with an average length of stay of 3.2 days. Hong Kong hosted 25 million visitors from January to July, up 52% YoY.

Colliers noted that he meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) segment contributed 703,076 overnight arrivals from January to June, accounting for 7% of the overnight market share.

The total included 346,883 (49.3%) from the mainland, 129,106 (18.4%) from long-haul markets, and 227,287 (32.3%) from short-haul markets.

On the flip side, the hotel sector slowed down after the boost in average occupancy in January and February to 85% and 86%, respectively. Average Daily Rate (ADR) for those months reached $1,444 and $1,492.

The average occupancy for H1 2024 stood at 83%, with ADR at $1,368, whilst revenue per available room (RevPar) averaged $1,135 from $1,039 in H1 2023.
