Restaurant sector receipts decline 1.3% YoY to $26.7b in Q3

Chinese restaurants had the steepest receipt decrease.

Total receipts in Hong Kong’s restaurant sector declined 1.3% YoY to $26.7b in Q3.

The provisional volume of total restaurant receipts dropped 3.3% YoY after netting out the effect of price changes.

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD)  said Chinese restaurants had the steepest decrease amongst the types of restaurants in terms of receipt value and volume, declining to 7.7% YoY and 9.8% YoY, respectively.

Total receipts of non-Chinese restaurants decreased by 0.6% YoY in value and 1.5% YoY in volume. Receipts of bars likewise fell, dropping by 6.3% YoY in value and 10.1% YoY in volume.

Fast food shops’ total receipts increased by 8.5% YoY in value and 5.7% YoY in volume. In contrast, miscellaneous eating and drinking places experienced a 0.3% YoY rise in value but a 2.8% YoY decline in volume.

Meanwhile, the provisional estimate of the value of total restaurant purchases decreased by 0.1% YoY to $8.8b.

A government spokesman attributed the negative performance of restaurants to changing consumption patterns among residents and visitors.

HKTDC signs first MOU with Singapore-based bank
