Hong Kong ranks third globally in GFCI 38

It also outpaced all Asia-Pacific markets in the Global Financial Centres Index.

Hong Kong remains the top financial centre in Asia-Pacific and ranks third globally in the latest Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI 38), published by Z/Yen Group and the China Development Institute.

With a rating of 764, Hong Kong sits just one point behind London and two behind New York, highlighting the razor-thin margins separating the world’s top financial hubs.

The GFCI 38 results showed a tightly packed global top four: New York continues to lead the index, followed closely by London (765), Hong Kong (764), and Singapore (763). Regionally, Hong Kong “retains its leading position” in Asia-Pacific, narrowly ahead of Singapore.

Hong Kong’s competitive edge is reinforced by its performance across the index’s five key pillars. The city ranked first globally in Business Environment, Infrastructure, and Reputation & General, whilst New York leads in Human Capital and Financial Sector Development.

In FinTech, Hong Kong made a major leap to claim the global first spot, overtaking previous leaders including New York and Singapore. Shenzhen ranked second, and New York third, with Singapore in fourth place.

The city also recorded the largest positive reputational gap in the index. Hong Kong’s survey-based assessment was 120 points higher than its model-based rating—the widest margin amongst all centres.

Chengdu and Taipei followed in this measure, whilst New York, London, and Singapore also ranked within the top 15.

Connectivity remained a strength for Hong Kong. The GFCI report highlighted the city’s wide-ranging links with other global financial centres, underscored by a dense international network shown in the index’s connectivity maps.

Hong Kong is also named amongst the centres globally expected to grow in importance, alongside other Asia-Pacific and Middle Eastern hubs.
