Vicon Construction receives HKB Greater Bay Area Enterprise Awards 2024 for heavy civil construction

Their completion of the project at Kai Tak proved how foundation and site formation works can help promote environmental responsibility.

Specialist foundation contractor Vicon Construction has been recognised with the Heavy Civil Construction category win at the recently held HKB Greater Bay Area Enterprise Awards 2024 for its successful completion of the foundation and site formation works contract for the Projected Composite Development at New Kowloon Inland Lot 6604 in Kai Tak, Kowloon.

The foundation and site formation works, which is located at the Old Kai Tak Airport and is within 35m from Victoria Harbour, is a significant project as it requires not only technical skill to construct buildings along the coastal line, but also helps demonstrate how foundation and site formation works can help promote environmental responsibility amongst building contractors.

This comes as the site requires a deep excavation of approximately 13m below sea level. Technically, the deep excavation technique used in this project can benefit any building by maximising basement area even along the coastline of the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

The grouting excavation technique used in Kai Tak airport proves that no pump was required to extract sea water from the site.  Since no water seepage occurred throughout the whole excavation, it helped speed up the construction process as well as the quality of the basement by minimising the opportunity of water leakage.

Meanwhile, over 55% of structural steel members for temporary works such as sheet piles, struts, steel platform king posts are used materials from other projects and about 60% of inert materials are being recycled. The inert waste reduction being achieved is more than double the requirement of BeamPlus standard of the Hong Kong Green Building Council. In addition, all equipment being used in this project are models under the European Emission Standard.

During the construction process, there has been no record of life-threatening issues, as well as any careless mistake causing any worker to suffer long-term leave. The accident rate per 1000 workers of this project is just 26.27%, which is less than the overall accident rate of 29.1% as provided by the Labour Department this year.

“Our foundation construction technique, the environment friendly construction method and the high standard of construction requirement can help to maximise the land use of the GBA, create a landmark of promoting minimised carbon emission, as well as effectively raise up the labour power by eliminating accidents happened on site. All these can help to attract investors to come and bloom the economy of the GBA,” Vicon Construction said.
