Towngas supports govt's green initiatives in Budget speech

Amongst the measures is the promotion of green methanol bunkering for vessels.

The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) welcomed the government's latest budget initiatives promoting green shipping and aviation.

Financial Secretary Paul Chan earlier outlined measures such as the promotion of green methanol bunkering for vessels, simplifying approval processes for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and extensive trials for new energy public transport.

“Towngas welcomes and fully supports the Government’s initiative to conduct a feasibility study on providing green methanol bunkering for local and ocean-going vessels,” the company said.

Towngas previously launched an environmentally friendly methanol project in Inner Mongolia, producing green methanol from scrap tires and biomass.

The company's investment in EcoCeres, a startup specializing in SAF production from waste oils and fats, also aligns with the government's goal to solidify Hong Kong's position as an international aviation hub.

Moreover, Towngas is also actively advancing its hydrogen energy projects, including a gas pipeline hydrogen extraction project at a bus depot in Chai Wan and a hydrogen energy application project in Sai Kung.

Don Cheng Hill-kwong, Towngas Head of Commercial–Hong Kong Utility, said that half of the gas produced by Towngas consists of hydrogen gas. 

He added that through the existing underground gas pipeline network, customers can extract high-purity hydrogen, offering a safe and efficient solution for various hydrogen-powered applications.
