Total port cargo throughput up 5.3% to 70.9m tonnes in Q3

Inward port load from Malaysia registered high growth.

Total port cargo throughput increased 5.3% YoY to 70.9 million tonnes in Q3, according to the Census and Statistics Department.

Within the total, inward port cargo rose 10.7% to 44.1 million tonnes whilst outward port cargo fell 2.5% to 26.8 million tonnes.

Seaborne and river cargo increased 2% and 11.3% respectively.

Within inward port cargo, imports and inward transhipment increased by 13.7% and 6.8% YoY in Q3 to 25.5 million tonnes and 18.6 million tonnes respectively.

For outward port cargo, exports decreased by 14.6% YoY to 9.3 million tonnes, whilst outward transhipment increased by 5.6% to 17.5 million tonnes.

Double-digit increases were registered in inward port cargo loaded in Malaysia (30%), Mainland China (21.6%) and Korea (11.9%). For outward port cargo, growth was recorded in Malaysia (39.8%), Taiwan (33.7%), and Korea (30.2%).

Strong growth was recorded in the tonnage of inward port cargo of stone, sand and gravel (97.2%), logs and timber; wood, simply worked (21.7%), and machinery (11.5%).

For the first nine months of the year, total port cargo throughput increased marginally by 1.4% in Q3.
