HK Tramways eyes higher rates
This is to sustain operational viability.
Hong Kong Tramways has submitted a fare adjustment proposal to the Transport Department to sustain the operational viability of its tram services.
Under the proposal, adult fares would increase to $3.30 from $3, whilst children’s and senior citizens’ fares would rise to $1.60 and $1.50, respectively. Monthly prices will remain unchanged.
According to Tramways, Farebox revenue remains a critical income stream alongside commercial partnerships, despite ridership staying over 15% below pre-pandemic 2018 levels.
With rising operational costs and the need to sustain maintenance and upgrade investments, Tramways said the proposed adjustment is essential to fund heritage-compliant technical system enhancements and expand non-ticket revenue projects.
In recent years, Tramways has prioritised investments to balance operational viability with service quality. Key initiatives include a significant workforce investment and ongoing modernisation efforts.
