Cargo output for 2023 decreased in most segments, C&SD

Vessel arrivals saw significant increases in 2023.

Total cargo throughput for 2023 fell 9% to 174.9m tonnes YoY, C&SD reported.

Inward port cargo and outward port cargo decreased by 7.7% and 11.1% to 111.7m tonnes and 63.2m tonnes respectively.

C&SD also said that within the port cargo, seaborne and river cargo decreased by 11.4% and 3.8% to 115.1m tonnes and 59.7m tonnes respectively from the previous year.

For containers, the port of Hong Kong handles 14.40m TEUs of containers, reflecting a decline of 13.7% YoY. Of these, laden and empty containers declined by 15.0% and 8.4% to 11.32mTEUs and 3.08m TEUs respectively.

Amongst laden containers, inward and outward containers dropped by 16.5% and 13.3% to 6.05m TEUs and 5.27m TEUs respectively.

When it comes to ocean vessel arrivals, 2023 recorded an increase of 12.7% to 18,867, with an increase in total capacity by 24.0% to 301.5m net tons.

Meanwhile, for river vessels, arrivals increased by 46.5% to 73,331 with the total capacity also increasing by 13.5% to 74.7m net tons.
