Government urged public to support minimum wage
The statutory minimum wage is a significant milestone in the development of Hong Kong's labour policy, said Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung.
According to the Hong Kong Information Services Department, Matthew Cheung emphasized that "the statutory minimum wage is the culmination of years of discussion among all stakeholders and the fruit of mutual understanding, comprmise and endeavour".
The debate about the implementation of the minimum wage should not undermine its benefits.
According to him, individual enterprises hold the decision to follow the Government's decision. This reveals the capbility of the enterprises "to balance the welfare of employees with the needs of the company, which ultimately pays the wages."
