Govt trials new technology to convert chicken waste into energy

The trial is set for August.

The government will trial an anaerobic co-digestion technology for chicken waste in August following its successful use with pig waste.

The initial phase of the trial will convert 10 tonnes of chicken waste into energy. The government may increase capacity depending on its effectiveness.

The initiative follows the government's projects to treat livestock waste using new technologies, including bioconversion technology, to promote long-term waste management solutions.

In 2021, the government secured a contractor to conduct a trial at the EcoPark using black soldier fly (BSF) bioconversion technology to treat chicken waste and convert it into fish feed and fertiliser.

The project commenced operations in February 2023 and processed 10 tonnes of chicken waste daily, accounting for a quarter of the chicken waste generated in Hong Kong.

Initially set to end after a year, the government and the contractor agreed to extend the contract by six months to collect more data.
