Hong Kong mulls low-income supplement

NGOs, political parties to be consulted.

According to a report, Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung says the Government is seriously exploring the idea of providing a low-income supplement for working families with particularly dependent children.

Speaking to reporters today, Mr Cheung said the idea is to promote employment and self-reliance, and help children, particularly those at school, to tackle intergenerational poverty.

He said it is an important policy measure and the Government will consider public proposals, including those by non-Government organisations and political parties.

"We will seriously examine them. We will take this idea back to the Commission on Poverty with a view to coming up with some concrete measures in the context of the Chief Executive's Policy Address next January."
