2024 Policy Address: Housing, infra policies will boost Northern Metropolis visibility

An analyst suggests careful land use allocation in the area to ensure sufficient housing.

Following Chief Executive John Lee’s 2024 Policy Address, analysts are optimistic about the developmental trajectory of Hong Kong, particularly regarding housing and infrastructure projects that elevate Northern Metropolis’ visibility.

The government’s policies on talent attraction and student accommodation align with Colliers’ outlined direction in its September report. Sunny Tan, chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, echoed this view, saying it focuses on developing the Northern Metropolis with an industry-oriented approach.

Kathy Lee, head of research at Colliers, suggests careful land use allocation and planning permissions in the Northern Metropolis University Town to ensure sufficient housing amidst the anticipated influx of students and professionals.

Sankar  Villupuram, director and East Asia Digital Services Leader at Arup, said the policies also underscore Hong Kong’s commitment to innovation and sustainable growth. Peter Ng, PwC Asia Pacific and China Vice Chairman, added that closer integration with the mainland will be crucial for speeding up initiatives like the Northern Metropolis.
