4 Hong Kong universities fell in global top 100 university rankings

Only one Hong Kong university climbed in the rankings

Four out of five Hong Kong universities slipped in the rankings in the top 100 of Times Higher Education’s (THE) World University Rankings.

The University of Hong Kong slipped from 31st in 2023 to 35th in 2024. The Chinese University of Hong Kong fell eight places from 45th in 2023 to 53rd in 2024. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology fell from 58th to 64th.

Hong Kong Polytechnic University slipped from 79th to 87th. 

Meanwhile, only the City University of Hong Kong climbed in the ranks, going up by 17 to 87th in the rankings from 79th in 2023.

Hong Kong has eight government-funded universities, six of which are ranked in THE’s World University Rankings 2024.

The UK’s University of Oxford is the highest-ranked university in the world in the World University Rankings 2024 with Stanford University taking second place, making it the US’s top-ranked university, and in third place is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

This year, THE introduced 18 calibrated performance indicators, which are grouped into five pillars: teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook and industry

The Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings 2024 is in its 20th year ranking 1,904 universities, up from 1,799 last year, from 108 countries and regions.

The survey studied 18 calibrated performance indicators, up from 13 last year, which are grouped into five pillars: teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook and industry. Four of the five new metrics include three that look at research quality and one that examines patents in the industry pillar.
