Gov’t expands 1+ drug approval mechanism
Vaccines and advanced therapy products can now be registered in HK.
The Hong Kong government said the ‘1+’ drug approval mechanism will be expanded to cover all new chemical entities starting next month, aiming to elevate healthcare standards.
Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau said that it will enable any new chemical entity, inclusing vaccines and advanced therapy products, to be registered in Hong Kong, giving patients more drug choices at lower costs.
“It will also promote drug research and development in the whole Greater Bay Area (GBA),” Chung-Mau said.
The secretary also said that through a "connect" measure, drugs and medical devices registered in Hong Kong but are not yet approved in Mainland China can be used by GBA healthcare institutions.
“This is advantageous for pharmaceutical companies as these drugs and devices have a ‘green channel’ for use of the 68 million residents in GBA,” Chung-Mau added.
