2024 Policy Address: HK to roll out 20 digital initiatives to enhance public services

These initiatives will leverage AI and blockchain technology.

About 20 digital government and smart city initiatives designed to accelerate the transformation of public services in Hong Kong will be launched this year, Chief Executive John Lee announced.

Lee, during his 2024 Policy Address, said these upcoming initiatives will leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology.

Amongst the proposed initiatives is the use of blockchain for issuing electronic certificates related to designated civil service examinations and implementing electronic licensing by the Fire Services Department. 

Additionally, AI will be employed to streamline public inquiries, ensuring a more responsive service for citizens.

The chief executive also said that the Digital Policy Office (DPO) will take the lead in piloting a locally developed generative AI document processing copilot application within government departments. 

Moreover, Lee said plans are in place to strengthen the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure. 

He said  that the government will require critical infrastructure operators to adopt protective measures for their computer systems, with a bill to be introduced later this year to formalise these requirements.
