OPPO deepens PolyU ties with $32.5m AI imaging research push

The university will also launch a new faculty to address computing needs.

OPPO Mobile is set to deepen its partnership with Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) by increasing funding and tech investment, particularly within the PolyU-OPPO Joint Innovation Research Centre.

Over the next five years, OPPO will invest approximately $32.5m to broaden the scale of research and development, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) imaging technology and supporting more PhD and postdoctoral researchers.

PolyU is also restructuring to better address AI and computing needs by launching a Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences in January 2025. This faculty, which will include the Department of Computing that houses the joint research centre, is expected to foster further collaboration and innovation.

Since establishing the PolyU-OPPO Joint Innovation Lab in 2022, the partnership has produced key advancements in AI imaging algorithms, like super-resolution and high dynamic range imaging, implemented in OPPO’s products.

The lab is also exploring technologies such as image restoration, detail enhancement using generative models, and interactive editing for images and videos. These developments aim to improve user experience and push forward innovation in AI-based imaging.
