New warning up on fraudulent bank emails

The public is advised anew not to access Internet banking accounts through hyperlinks embedded in e-mails, Internet search engines or suspicious pop-up windows.

The Monetary Authority on Wednesday issued another alert on emails purporting to be sent from Standard Chartered Bank (HK) which connect to fraudulent websites. The authority issued a similar warning two days ago regarding a different embedded hyperlink.

The emails ask customers to use an embedded hyperlink to connect to fraudulent website www.creative.dreamhosters.com/cube/standardchartered.htm, and verify their account information by entering their Internet banking account’s user name and password.

The bank has clarified it has not sent the emails and has no connection with the fraudulent websites. It said it does not send emails asking its customers to provide passwords or verify account information online.

Anyone who has provided personal information to the websites, or conducted financial transactions through them, should contact Standard Chartered Bank on 2886 8868 or Police at 2860 5012.

The authority again reminded the public not to access their Internet banking accounts through hyperlinks embedded in e-mails, Internet search engines or suspicious pop-up windows.
