Hong Kong warned about avian influenza case in Guangdong

Victim is a poultry worker.

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health in Hong Kong has been notified by Chinese officials of a suspected case of avian influenza A(H7N9) in a woman hospitalized in Guangdong.

The Department of Health of Guangdong Province reported the suspected case is a 51-year-old woman from Huizhou who tested positive for the avian influenza virus. The samples have been sent the Chinese CDC for confirmation.

Reports said the victim is a poultry worker who has a history of exposure to live poultry.

A DH spokesman said CHP is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining close liaison with mainland health authorities for case details, and is keeping a close eye on the latest advice from the World Health Organization.

To date, a total of 133 human cases of A(H7N9 have been laboratory confirmed in the mainland. Zhejiang has 46 cases; Shanghai, 33 cases; Jiangsu, 28 cases; Jiangxi, six cases; Fujian, five cases; Anhui, four cases; Henan, four cases; Shandong, two cases; Hunan, two cases; Beijing, two cases and Hebei, one case.
