Government targets 12,600 public housing flats on Kai Tak by 2026

The former airport area could provide homes for 35,100 residents.

The Hong Kong government is set to build roughly 12,600 public housing flats on seven sites in the Kai Tak development area by 2026 in a bid to ease the city’s chronic housing crunch, reports South China Morning Post which cited a paper submitted to the Kowloon City District Council.

The city’s two major public housing providers said that the government proposed to hold on to the sites in the former airport for public housing instead of selling them to private developers.

The seven sites, which are in close proximity of two future MTR stations - Sung Wong Toi and Kai Tak, along the Sha Tin-Central Link - are expected to be capable of housing about 35,100 people. Two sites will be allotted for the Housing Society and the five others sites for the Housing Authority.

Construction work is projected to begin between 2020 and 2022, and to be completed between 2024 and 2026.
