60,000 milk formula tins suspected to contain harmful ingredients recalled

But where are the other 20,000?

According to a report, the importer of a milk formula product suspected to be tainted with Clostridium botulinum-contaminated ingredients, is confident more than 60,000 tins can be recalled within two days.

Acting Permanent Secretary for Food & Health (Food) Christopher Wong today met the importer of a milk formula product now being recalled in Hong Kong. The product is Cow & Gate Happy Kid 3 (growing up formula for one to three years old) (Batch: 3178 and 3179).

The importer said that of the more than 80,000 tins of powder concerned that have entered the Hong Kong market, more than 60,000 can be recalled within two days. The remainder could possibly be in retailers’ storage or already have been sold to customers, including tourists.

Mr Wong urged the importer to ensure the recall is conducted smoothly and thoroughly, and should be completed as soon as possible to safeguard public health. The importer should also ensure it has sufficient manpower to handle enquiries.

Also discussed at the meeting, were measures to strengthen the monitoring of foods on the local market to check if Clostridium botulinum-contaminated ingredients are used.

The centre has deployed staff to enhance checks at retail outlets, and so far no other affected products have been found. It will monitor the situation and test milk powder products to ensure they are safe for consumption.

The centre will strengthen liaison with New Zealand authorities and the State General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection & Quarantine.

The New Zealand Consulate-General in Hong Kong has assured it will share any new information on the issue with the centre.
