Social welfare spending up 11% this year

Education, social welfare and health care will account for $137 billion in total.

According to Hong Kong Information Services Department, this will account about 56% of all recurrent spending in 2011-12.

Education remains the Government's biggest spending area.

Financial Secretary John Tsang said: "We invest heavily in education because it is an investment in our people and our future."

"Social welfare spending has gone up 11% this year because we need to do more to help the vulnerable and needy - in particular our elderly citizens who have contributed to Hong Kong's prosperity over the years with the perseverance, resilience and desire for self reliance."
